Karikari Estate is a relatively new venture that has the distinction of being the northernmost winery in New Zealand; a few hours drive north of Auckland. While the maritime influence keeps summer temperatures on par with the Auckland vicinity, the winters are warmer. You can enjoy the warm weather at Karikari's sister company, Carrington, a lodge and golf resort.

With its first vintage in 2003, Karikari Estate picked up two silver medals at the 2004 Air New Zealand Awards for the Pinotage and Merlot-Malbec-Cabernet blend. Beginning in 2004, the chief winemaker is Ben Dugdale, whose long resume includes stints at Matakana Estate and Dry River Wines, the top-rated cult winery in New Zealand. Given Mr. Dugdale's experience at Dry River, expectations are high for the Syrah.

Wines:

  • Chardonnay
  • Syrah
  • Silver Bay - chardonnay/semillon/viognier blend
  • Cabernet-Merlot
  • Pinotage
  • Merlot-Malbec-Cabernet
  • Sauvignon Blanc (from Marlborough)
